India and Pakistan may be divided by borders but they will always be united by art and entertainment! Art and talent know no borders, it is a universal property! Bollywood movies have been releasing in Pakistan for over a decade now and with the revival of Pakistani cinema, our movies and superstars have also traveled across border!
This exchange of talent and movies have proven to be fruitful for the relationship between these two counties. Apart from political initiatives, entertainment-particularly with films-try to bridge the divide as much as possible. But there are a few Bollywood movies that that did the exact opposite and were banned for all the right reasons.
Here is a list of 10 Bollywood That Were Banned For All The Right Reasons:
The Dirty Picture
The Vidya Balan-starrer was too bold for the Pakistani audience according to the censor board. They stopped it from being screened in Pakistan as it was deemed unsuitable for theatrical exhibition. Oh la la…Oh la la…this movie promotes unhealthy and unethical fantasies!
Ek Tha Tiger
The plot of the Ek tha Tiger dealt with altercations between the intelligence agencies of India and Pakistan i.e RAW and ISI respectively. Hence the ban! The vice-chairman of the Pakistan censor board said, “We have a strict criteria due to which films that have themes that touch on anti-terrorism and are against Pakistan’s national institutions or security agencies ultimately have to be censored because they are against the national interest.”
Agent Vinod is another Bollywood movie that got banned just days before its scheduled release owing to its plot which established Pakistan’s ISI as the anti-India element. Pakistani officials and spies were shown supporting Taliban in setting off a nuclear bomb in Delhi.
The Sonam Kapoor starrer Raamjhanaa is beautiful movie which was banned for religious reasons! The movie narrates the journey of one sided love of a Hindu boy in pursuit of a Muslim girl, could not impress the censor board in Pakistan. The Muslim girl falling for a Hindu boy was just impossible for Pakistan to handle!
