5 Ways to Get Rid of a Sore Throat

A sore throat may follow a cold or can be followed by a cold, cough and chest infection. It is contagious and spreads through sneezing and coughing. It is usually due to a viral infection but can also be caused by bacteria.  As this is a  common condition during winters, we bring for you 5 easy home remedies that can be used to cure this ailment.

Common home remedies to cure a terrible sore throat:

Warm saline gargle

Warm saline gargling works like a charm to heal the throat. Take a pinch of salt in a glass of lukewarm water and use it to gargle 3-4 times daily. Its helps increase the blood flow to the pharyngeal region and washes away the infection. Gargling also reduces the edema associated with the infection and it also loosens the mucus, which can be expelled easily.

Drink plenty of warm liquids

Take lots of warm liquids to soothes your throat and relieve you from the pain. Tea, lemon tea, ginger-lemon tea, soups, cinnamon tea, warm orange juice with lemon drops, honey + lemon juice + crushed ginger in warm water etc. These are basic and common home remedies that are very helpful in relieving a sore throat.

Apple cider vinegar and salt

If your throat is left raw by a bad cough, grab a bottle of apple cider vinegar because germs can’t survive in the acidic coating it’ll form on your throat. Gargle with 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar and 1 teaspoon salt dissolved in a glass of warm water; use several times a day if needed. For a gentler treatment, combine 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar and 1/4 cup honey and take 1 tablespoon every four hours.

Throat sootheners

Cough lozenges, menthol / eucalyptus oil lozenges, honey + lemon help by soothing the throat and menthol causes temporary numbness to the sick throat. This mixture increases saliva secretion and prevents dryness of the throat.

A soft diet

Steamed, microwaved and a mashed diet works best in such cases. Mash apple with honey as it acts as a throat soothener and it is easy to swallow without hurting the throat.
